Health begins in the home. Stable, high quality, affordable tobacco-free housing is a key determinant of health and has been linked to multiple positive physical and mental health outcomes. Conversely, studies have documented the many health-related issues that poor quality or substandard housing has on the health of residents, particularly vulnerable populations. Asthma and upper respiratory illness, exposure to secondhand smoke and other toxins, physical injury from neglected building structures, lack of opportunity for physical activity and healthy eating, and communicable disease resulting from poor sanitation and pests are some of the major health concerns that are of concern to public health professionals, housing advocates and decision makers.
